The 2024 Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago, set to be held from August 19-22, faced significant protests despite the recent shift in the Democratic presidential nominee. With President Joe Biden withdrawing from the race, Vice President Kamala Harris became the official nominee following a virtual roll call on August 5.

Protesters, led by the coalition to March on the DNC, gathered in large numbers, with an estimated 20,000-25,000 participants. The main demand was for the Democratic Party to end US military aid to Israel, amid the ongoing crisis in Gaza. The coalition, which includes groups like the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression and Black Lives Matter Chicago, also advocated for reallocating funds from war to social needs, defending the rights of marginalized groups, and establishing community control over police.

The convention, expects to amass 50,000 visitors, aimed to energize Democratic voters around Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. Despite Biden’s absence, the event will feature speeches from prominent figures like Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and Hillary Clinton. Harris’s campaign quickly gained momentum, drawing significant attention and raising substantial funds. However, the protests highlighted continued tensions within the party and dissatisfaction with it’s policies on international issues.
