Jasprit Bumrah

During this time, efforts are being made to take that success further.

He discusses his injury recovery, why he maintains simple communication with his young teammates, and explains why repetition is the secret to his yorker skills.
Given that the right-arm bowler has fully recovered from a serious back injury he suffered over the last 12 months, Bumrah is considered a vital component of India’s hopes of winning a second ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, to be held in the USA and West Indies this month.
Bumrah missed a lot of international cricket between 2022 and 2023, which led to the fast bowler – who was praised as one of the best bowlers to play for India – missing the most recent T20 World Cup as well as other important matches in 2022.

But the ace bowler made a comeback with the T20I series against Ireland in August last year and since then he has not looked back.
During India’s journey to the final of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, he was one of the standout players, taking 20 wickets at an average of 18.65 and an economy of just four.

Bumrah, who returned to form just a few months ahead of the global mega event, focused on a simple philosophy that helped him comeback.

“Ever since I came back from my injury, I have just focused on enjoying the game as much as possible.” Bumrah said he is trying to focus on the process rather than the uncertainty surrounding the game.
“Because (some) things will happen according to me. (Some) things will not happen according to me.
“All these things will be part of my process. That’s why I just realized that I have started playing this game. Because I like this game.
“And I will focus on that instead of the end result. So in that aspect you reduce your pressure. And you enjoy the game.
“When you focus on the things you can control, not the things you can’t control.”

T20I wickets

Bumrah is third among all-time Indian wicket-takers.
A large part of his success in this format can be attributed to his accurate yorkers, which can penetrate a batsman’s defence with speed.
Bumrah revealed how he invented the yorker while playing tennis-ball cricket as a child to explain how he discovered this wicket-taking option.
“So I played a lot of tennis-ball, rubber-ball cricket when I was growing up.” Bumrah said. “I used to play a lot with my friends in summer camps. And during summer vacations. Or whenever I had a lot of time.
“So when I was a kid, I thought that was the only way to get wickets. Because I was a fan of fast bowling. Whatever I used to see on TV, I used to get really fascinated by it.
“So I tried to replicate that.”

Bumrah said that with constant practice he has almost mastered this technique.
“Is it (tennis-ball cricket) a secret (bowling a yorker) or not? I don’t know,” Bumrah asked.
“But repetition is definitely there. Because I have kept this delivery. I still practice it. I keep practicing it. Because whatever skill you develop, you have to practice it and make it stronger. So I think a combination of both will be the answer.”
Bumrah, who made his debut for India in 2016, is the most experienced bowler in the squad for the T20 World Cup.

Even as an experienced member of the club, Bumrah was a firm believer in giving young players like Arshdeep their own space and time to develop within a team environment.
“Don’t try to teach too much. That’s one thing I’ve learned,” Bumrah said. “Because whenever people need help, I give them a chance to ask their questions.
“Or if they need my help. Because you don’t want to give away too much information.”
Explaining his strategy, Bumrah said that developing skills is an integral part of the game.
“It’s not like they just got lucky and got here. So that’s what I try to do. I give them some information from my experience,” He added.
“But I don’t burden them with (extra) information because that is also a part of the journey.
“You have to find your own methods and solutions.”
India are in Group A along with Pakistan, Ireland, Canada and the United States in the Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.
