bengaluru: teen boy, trying to pluck mangoes, dies of electrocution in hoskote

Bengaluru: A 13-year-old boy died of electrocution while he was plucking mangoes. The boy used a wooden pole to pluck mangoes which touched a BESCOM 11kV wire on Sunday leading to his death. The incident took place near Dandupalya in Hoskote. The victim, a class 9 student identified as Sai Bhavan, class 9 student, is from Sulibele area near Devanahalli in Bengaluru Rural district. His 15-year-old brother stayed in the state-owned boys’ hostel as the two studied in a government school in the area.

In the morning, Bhavan and his brother went on the terrace to dry their washed clothes and noticed some mangoes hanging from the tree five feet away from the building. They decided to pluck the mangoes using a wooden pole. They found a nearly 12 foot long pole on the side of the terrace and an iron pipe tied to it.

Bhavan used the pole to pluck some mangoes and suddenly lost balance due to which the pole hit the overhead live wire. The boy died of electrocution on the spot as the pole was wet due to rain over the past few days. Following the incident, his brother informed the warden and immediately the boy was taken to the hospital where he was declared dead.

The BESCOM officer said that a tender was issued for shifting overhead lines away from the hostel premises, last week, a TOI report stated.

After a postmortem examination, Bhavan’s body was handed over to the family. The father of the deceased, Anand, who is a car driver by profession lodged a complaint at Hoskote police station and an investigation has been launched into the matter.

The Education Department officials and BESCOM officials later went to the hostel and instructed the students not to go on the terrace until the wires are fixed.
