Ukraine, considering the international situation, is undoubtedly important, but Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Warsaw is the first by an Indian prime minister in over 40 years.
Most importantly, several major decisions are on the agenda. First, India and Poland are working on a “Strategic Partnership.” this is something India has with a handful of countries– the last european country that became India’s strategic partner was Greece during the Modi visit about a year ago. This is a clear sign that relations between the two countries are on an upswing.
Secondly, there is considerable potential for a stronger military partnership with Poland. Among NATO countries, Poland spends more on defence as a percentage of its gross domestic product than most others particularly big countries like Britain, Germany and France. Poland was once a warsaw pact country and it is possible to get spares for russian-designed weaponry that are more difficult to acquire from Moscow because of the war, from Poland. This may include spares for tanks, armoured personnel carriers, Mig-29 fighters, frigates and destroyers for the navy and other material.
Thirdly, India is looking forward to cooperate with Poland on artificial intelligence and information technology. This is a sunrise area and there is a clear realisation that the poles are good at ai and cooperation would help both.
India will also thank the poles for their help in getting students out of ukraine when the war began two years ago. The poles hosted several thousand Indian students coming out of ukraine before they could be flown back to India.
