Independent presidential candidate Robert F Kennedy Jr is expected to drop out of the 2024 race and endorse Donald Trump, several media reports said on Wednesday. RFK Jr will make an announcement in Phoenix on Friday, his campaign said. This comes days after the 70-year-old’s running mate Nicole Shanahan admitted that his White House shot is ‘not easy’, and there is a possibility that he joins Trump.
“We don’t want to be a spoiler. We wanted to win. We wanted a fair shot,” Shanahan, 38, said in an Impact Theory podcast interview released Tuesday.“There’s two options that we’re looking at and one is staying in: forming [a new political party], but we run the risk of a Kamala Harris and [Harris running mate Tim] Walz presidency, because we draw votes from Trump.”
Donald Trump has already said that Kennedy Jr could be offered an administration job if he drops out and endorses him. The two reportedly spoke on phone when the former president was in Mailwaukee for the Republican National Convention.
Robert F Kennedy Jr suspending his campaign could be a massive advantage for Trump. Most polls show that RFK Jr’s withdrawal would probably help the Republican nominee, though the result will likely be decided by narrow margins.
Polling data also suggests that many of Kennedy’s supporters lean Republican, meaning their votes would likely shift to Trump, reducing potential third-party vote splitting. This would be particularly impactful in key battleground states where even a small shift in voter support could determine the outcome. Additionally, discussions about Kennedy possibly joining a Trump administration could further solidify this voter base
