Afghanistan will look to create history when they take on a hapless South Africa in the third and final ODI of the series on Sunday, September 22 in Sharjah. They won an ODI series against the Proteans for the first time on Friday with a match to spare, having won the first by six wickets and the second by a whopping 177 runs. They have an incredible opportunity to turn the tables on South Africa entirely when they face off in the final ODI this evening.
The thumping 177-run win against South Africa, Afghanistan’s biggest in ODIs by runs, came just two days after they defeated the Proteans for the first time.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s 105 made him the first Afghan man to hit seven ODI centuries and he will be at the forefront yet again, this time in the third ODI.
Afghanistan’s strong total of 311/4 in sweltering heat was followed by South Africa being all out for a paltry 134 in the 35th over. Birthday boy Rashid Khan snared five wickets as the Proteans collapsed.
South Africa’s chase began with a promise. The return from illness of skipepr Temba Bavuma gave the Proteas some hope. He scored 38 and put on 73 runs for the opening wicket with Tony de Zorzi, who made 31.
But after Bavuma top-edged a pull shot against Azmatullah Omarzai’s short-pitched ball, an inexperienced South Africa team collapsed. They lost seven wickets for 39 runs before Rashid completed a five-for by clean bowling Aiden Markram on 21.
It was a near replica of the first ODI when South Africa was reduced to 36/7 inside the first 10 overs. On Sunday, they will have one last chance to save themselves some blushes in the Sharjah heat.
