Rishabh Pant made a stunning return to Test cricket and smoked a magnificent hundred in the first Test against Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Pant was away from the game due to the tragic car accident he suffered in December 2022. He made a return to cricket in IPL 2024 and since has played significant innings for India across formats.
Pant’s heroics in the first Test triggered a debate about the destructive left-hander being the best wicketkeeper-batter to play for the country, even better than MS Dhoni. The former India captain played 90 Test matches, scoring 4876 runs, including six hundreds. Pant is only 34 Tests old but has already leveled with Dhoni in terms of Test hundreds. He has scored centuries in England, South Africa and Australia, a feat Dhoni never achieved. Dhoni, on the other hand, was a veteran in white-ball cricket, scoring over 10,000 ODI runs. Pant, meanwhile, has just over 2000 runs across white-ball formats.
Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali gave his take on the Pant vs Dhoni debate and slammed the fans for the bizarre comparison. He said MS Dhoni was a legend as he led India to World Cup wins and the ICC Champions Trophy. Ali added Pant is doing well at the moment but he has a long way to go before being compared to Dhoni. He asked the fans if they’d compare Shubman Gill with Virat Kohli. Ali said that a fair comparison between Dhoni and Pant will be done when Pant ends his career.
