kolkata's iconic trams conclude 150-year run, but a heritage ride will continues for locals and travellers alike

The rhythmic clatter of tram wheels on tracks has been a familiar soundtrack for many Kolkata residents. The soft swaying motion the gentle creaking of the wooden benches and the sounds of street vendors mingling with the tram bell are all a part of an urban cosmos that feels uniquely Kolkata.

And now, the iconic tram services in Kolkata are set to be discontinued after 150 years of operation. While the decision marks the end of an era for many residents, officials have confirmed that a heritage stretch from Maidan to Esplanade will continue to operate, preserving a piece of the city’s history.

The trams, known for their distinctive yellow and blue designs, have been an integral part of Kolkata’s iconography since their inception in 1873. Initially introduced to ease congestion in the bustling streets, the tram service quickly became a beloved mode of transport for generations of commuters. It started off as horse-drawn trams that ran between Sealdah d Armenian Ghat Street before being electrified in 1902.

Kolkata’s tram system is the oldest tram network operating in India(and the only one), and oldest operating tramway in Asia. But over the last few decades, the trams have faced challenges due to increasing traffic congestion, aging infrastructure, and rising operational costs.

Despite these challenges, the decision to discontinue the tram service entirely has drawn mixed reactions from the public. Many residents expressed their sadness over the loss of such an iconic and cherished mode of transport.
