Renad Attallah A young girl dressed in a red plaid shirt and a pair of denim jeans smiles at the camera and begins preparing a “Gazan-style Fattah.” She brings out a large cooking pot, expertly lights a portable single-burner gas stove, and adds chicken pieces to start cooking the Fattah.
With more than 796K followers on Instagram, ten-year-old Renad Ataullah has become a food influencer and caught the attention of the world. A resident of Deir el-Balah in central Gaza, her cooking tutorials on her Instagram page (@renadfromgaza) have attracted a large following. Her cheerful demeanour and infectious smile are a stark contrast to some of the images she shares, set against the backdrop of war-torn Gaza.
Renad currently lives in a shelter with her mother and sisters. The house, used as a refuge by several other families, has become her temporary home. Her unboxing videos of aid boxes from countries like the UAE and Türkiye, filled with sheer gratitude and joy, have gone viral. Many of her cooking tutorials are made using ingredients from these boxes.
Scrolling through her feed is a delicious journey, but one that weighs heavily on the heart. In one of her cooking tutorials, Renad prepares a “War Sandwich,” captioning it —”Limited ingredients, with limitless opportunities for creativity and innovation.”
In another, she makes vermicelli, Gazan-style. But it’s the caption of this post that makes you pause — “Before the war broke out, we used to make this for breakfast on Fridays, after a long, hard week of studying (by the way, Friday is the official weekly holiday, not Saturday!). This dish reminded me of the inner peace I felt after a week full of hard work, studying and tiredness. Now, there are no studies, no work, and no Friday celebrations—only the vermicelli and the tiredness remain.” (sic)
According to reports, Renad’s account is managed by her 25-year-old sister, Nourhan Ataullah, a pharmacist by profession. Her Instagram feed also has pictures of Renad distributing food packages to those displaced by the war.
