kulhad pizza couple mms scandal akal takht turban appeal nihang sikh warning

New Delhi: The Kulhad Pizza couple, Sehaj Arora and Gurmeet Kaur, have found themselves at the center of another controversy after an alleged MMS scandal and have now sought help from the Akal Takht Sahib after a group of Nihang Sikhs asked Sehaj to take off his turban or stop making videos. The couple has now requested the Jathedar (religious head) of the Akal Takht Sahib to decide on the matter.

The couple had retreated from social media after a morphed video of them was leaked, and had recently started posting again on social media with zany food recipes from their restaurant Kulhad Pizza. However, the Kulhad Pizza couple has been facing significant backlash as many members of the Sikh community were not pleased by their comeback to the internet.

What’s Kulhad Pizza couple’s Latest Controversy?

Nihang Sikhs have been protesting against the couple’s continued presence on social media, raising concerns about how the duo is perceived, particularly with regards to Sehaj Arora’s wearing of a turban in their videos.

The Nihang Sikhs, a prominent Sikh warrior group known for their traditional values, have expressed strong disapproval of Sehaj Arora’s use of the turban in his social media content. They argue that his actions are tarnishing the image of Sikh men, especially in light of the MMS scandal, which has already sparked outrage among their fanbase and beyond.

A group of Nihang Sikhs visited the Kulhad Pizza shop operated by the couple and directly confronted them about the issue. They demanded that Sehaj Arora either stop wearing the turban while making videos or cease producing social media content altogether. According to the Nihangs, the sacred symbolism of the turban is being undermined in the digital space, particularly when associated with controversial figures.

What The Couple Said?

In a self-released video, the couple requested that the Akal Takht Sahib ensure the protection of them and their family. They also said they would submit a letter to the Jathedar sahib of the organisation and ask for him to decide whether Sehaj Arora could keep his turban.

“For the last 2-3 days, there has been a question on whether I can tie a turban on not. To get an answer on the same, I will go to the the Akal Takht Sahib along with my entire family. If I am wrong, I should be punished. If my family is being wronged then justice should be given…I would also like to request the Akal Takht Sahib ensure my and my family’s safety and I would like to request authorities to ensure that we don’t have to face harassment.”

Gurpreet Kaur and Sehaj Arora originally rose to prominence through their viral videos celebrating Punjabi food and culture. Their restaurant, Kulhad Pizza, became popular in part due to their engaging social media presence, where they shared food reviews, recipes, and glimpses into their lives.

However, their rise to fame took a challenging turn when a private MMS video of the couple was leaked online. The scandal brought them a wave of negative attention, drastically affecting their personal lives and business.

The couple faced severe backlash, which led them to retreat from the public eye for over a year. During this time, they dealt with the emotional and financial fallout, and their restaurant’s sales suffered. In a candid podcast appearance, Gurpreet and Sehaj opened up about the toll the scandal took on their mental health and their efforts to cope with the situation.

In their first public appearance this year in August, the couple spoke on the podcast “Talks with Namit” about the misconceptions they had to face, including allegations that they leaked the video themselves to gain fame.

“We started with a cart and built a restaurant with so much hard work. Today, sales at our restaurant have dropped to 10% of what we used to get earlier,” Gurmeet Kaur claimed. “Only 10%. Which person will do this to themselves?”
