Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, organised its 39th convocation today. In an unsual incident, a student named Prakash while receiving his doctorate from Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi, submitted a petition highlighting the issues faced by the students of Bharathiar University. The letter was handed over to the Governor on behalf of Bharatiyar University Research Scholars and students. The subject of letter reads ‘Problems faced by research scholars and students of Bharathiyar University’. The complaint states research scholars are forced to work in the home of some guides.
Issues being faced by students
- Some Guides at Bharatiyar University do not treat research scholars as research scholars. Apart from academic works, research scholars are forced to work in the home of some guides.
- The University has Adi Dravidian hostels, but since it is run as a public hostels. So the Research Scholars and students of Adi Dravidian (Scheduled Casre) have a heavy burden in paying monthly mess fees.
At the time of viva, the research scholars are advised by some guides to spend fifty thousand to one lakh rupees. Not only this, by the compulsion of some guides, Research Scholars are offering the money, food in the department and gold to some guides after the viva voce examination is completed successfully.
The student also pointed out that they are being charged for Sports day but it has not been celebrated at University for last four years. The students and staffs are not allowed to use the grounds, however, it is used by outsiders for rent on weekends.
