gully boy fame rap sensation mc altaf says debut album halaat is ‘the story of anyone’ - exclusive

Mumbai-based rap sensation MC Altaf recently released his highly anticipated debut album Halaat – an eight-track compilation which chronicles his journey from struggles to stardom. Haalat, according to Altaf, reflects where he has been, what he has seen and the struggles he has faced. Calling his journey, a “rollercoaster of ups and downs,” Altaf, in an exclusive interview with Zoom revealed, “Halaat captures that reality—whether it’s the harshness of life in Dharavi or the emotional rollercoaster of trying to make it in the music industry.” According to the talented rapper, “The title is my way of showing that, no matter what your circumstances are, there’s always a way to rise above them.”

Excerpts from an interview:

How did your upbringing in Dharavi influence the themes and narratives in Halaat?

Growing up in Dharavi has shaped every aspect of my music. The struggles, the grind, the energy—it’s all there in Halaat. Living in Dharavi, you learn early on how to fight for everything. That’s why the album is raw and real because it’s about survival, community, and never giving up. Dharavi has given me a unique perspective and the ability to tell stories that are both personal and universal.

What was the creative process like for you while working on this album?

The creative process for Halaat was intense. It was about digging deep into my experiences and translating them into music. I spent long hours in the studio, experimenting with different sounds, lyrics, and ideas. I had to challenge myself to stay authentic while also pushing the boundaries of what I could do musically. It was exhausting, but it was worth it because I was able to create something that truly reflects who I am.

You collaborated with notable artists DIVINE and Sammohit. What was it like working with them?

Working with DIVINE bhai and Sammohit is always an incredible experience. DIVINE has been a huge influence on me, and having him on this album felt like things coming full circle. He’s always been supportive and has helped shape my career. Sammohit is like a brother to me, and our creative chemistry just clicks. Every time we get together, we push each other to be better, and that shows in the music we make.

How do you choose the artists you want to collaborate with, and what do you look for in those partnerships?

For me, collaborations are all about vibe and authenticity. I need to connect with the artist on a deeper level beyond just the music. I look for people who are passionate, hardworking, and have something real to say. Whether it’s DIVINE, Sammohit, or someone new, it’s about creating something that resonates with both of us and our audiences.

How do you think your sound has evolved since your debut EP Robin Hood?

Robin Hood was more about having fun with the music and just expressing raw emotions. With Halaat, I’ve evolved as an artist. The sound is more refined, and the storytelling is more mature. I’ve experimented with different genres, production styles, and lyrical themes. It’s a more complete representation of who I am today, while Robin Hood was more of a snapshot of that moment in time.

What do you want listeners to take away from Halaat?

I want listeners to feel inspired. Halaat is my story, but it’s also the story of anyone who’s faced struggles and kept going. I want them to see that no matter where you come from or what your situation is, you can make it if you work hard and stay true to yourself. I hope people can relate to the hunger, the hustle, and the resilience that runs through the album.
