Israel claimed Yahya Sinwar’s Wife Carrying Rs 27 Lakh Hermes Birkin Handbag
Jerusalem: Israel slammed Yahya Sinwar and his wife for “enjoying luxuries” as his wife was carrying a handbag worth $32,000 (approx. ₹27 lakh) in a footage released by the IDF (Israel Defense Forces). In the video, the slain Hamas chief and his family are seen escaping through an underground tunnel just hours before the Gaza-based group, on October 7 last year, began terrorist attacks on Israel’s soil.
Sinwar, accused by the Jewish state of masterminding the attacks, was killed by Israeli soldiers in Rafah city of the Gaza Strip on Wednesday.
“Sinwar’s wife caught in this photo sneaking to the tunnels the tunnels the night before October 7th – get this – clutching a $32,000 Hermes Birkin bag! While Gazans endured hardship under Hamas, Sinwar and his family were shamelessly living in luxury, indulging while sending others to die,” the X handle Israel, run by the country’s foreign ministry, posted.
Lieutenant Colonel Avichay Adraee, the Arabic language spokesperson of the IDF, repeated the claim. He contrasted the luxurious life enjoyed by Sinwar’s family, with the poverty experienced by most residents of Gaza, who ‘don’t have enough money for food.’
‘Not Even Close’
Netizens were quick to point that the handbag was not from the brand Hermes and one user pointed, “Hermes Birkin bags are never manufactured with metal fixtures on leather to leather connection points, they are always stitched. All leather to leather connections are stitched.”
“Literally not the same purse,” wrote another user. A comment read, “That’s not a birkin lol”. A comment read, “Even someone with zero fashion sense knows this bag ain’t no Hermès, not even close. How’s the official Israel account gonna mess that up? Y’all are embarrassing yourselves out here.”
Another user wrote, “Such liars you are. Birkin doesn’t lose its shape no matter how much you stuff in it.”
Who is Yahya Sinwar’s wife?
In November 2011, the Hamas leader married Samar Muhammad Abu Zamar, 18 years younger to him. The couple had three children.
In July, he succeeded Ismail Haniyeh as Hamas chief following the latter’s assassination, allegedly by Israel, in Iran’s capital Tehran. Sinwar had served 23 years in Israeli prison for the murder of Palestinians whom he suspected of cooperating with Israel. In October 2011, he was one of over 1,000 terrorists Israel released in return for Gilad Shalit, a soldier Hamas kidnapped in 2006.
A bodyguard of Haniyeh was also killed in the attack that renewed tensions between Israel and Iran.
