New Delhi: Amid escalating tensions in West Asia, India remains in touch with Iran and a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iranian Masoud Pezeshkian is on the cards. On the sidelines of the BRICS Summit being held in Russia, PM Modi is likely to meet Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian this week.

If happens, this will be the first bilateral meeting between the two leaders since the reformist president assumed office in July this year.

New Delhi’s agenda for the upcoming BRICS Summit includes safe and free movement in Arabian Sea along with territorial integrity and sovereignty. Leaders of BRICS countries will meet in the city of Kazan from Tuesday to Thursday this week.

PM Narendra Modi will also be travelling to Kazan on the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Friday. This will be Prime Minister Modi’s second visit to the country this year.

In July this year, PM Modi visited Russia for a two-day visit, his first since the country’s war with Ukraine, to attend the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit. PM Modi met Putin at his residence outside Moscow, followed by talks at the Kremlin. PM Modi was also conferred the ‘Order of St Andrew the Apostle’ award by President Putin for his contribution to fostering bilateral ties between the two countries. The award was announced in 2019

Putin hosted PM Modi for a private meeting and dinner at his residence in Novo-Ogarevo, clearly reflecting the importance Moscow attached to the Indian leader’s visit. The two leaders were seen having a warm conversation in an informal setting.

The theme of this year’s summit is “Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security”. “The summit will offer a valuable opportunity to assess the progress of initiatives launched by BRICS and to identify potential areas for future collaboration,” the external affairs ministry said.

Tensions continue to escalate in the Middle East as Israel held Iran responsible for the “assassination attempt” on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after a drone was launched towards his residence in the Israeli town of Caesarea.

Netanyahu earlier warned Iran’s “proxy,” Hezbollah for the “grave mistake”, saying that the “assassination” attempt will not deter him or Israel to “eliminate” the terrorists and “those who dispatch them.”

In a social media post on X, Netanyahu wrote, “The attempt by Iran’s proxy Hezbollah to assassinate me and my wife today was a grave mistake. This will not deter me or the State of Israel from continuing our just war against our enemies in order to secure our future.” Netanyahu further warned Iran saying,”anyone who tries to harm Israel’s citizens will pay a heavy price.” He asserted that Israel will continue its operations against the terrorists and assured to bring back hostages from Gaza.
