7 Dead As As Under-construction Building Collapses In Bengaluru Amid Heavy Rain

Bengaluru: Seven people died after an under-construction building collapsed in the Horamavu Agara area of eastern Bengaluru amid heavy rain. Efforts are underway to clear the debris and rescue the trapped persons. 13 have been rescued so far, officials said on Wednesday.

The deceased have been identified as Harman, 26 years, Tripal, 35 years, Mohd Sahil, 19 years, Sathya Raju, 25 years and Shankar.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar visited the spot this morning to take stock of the situation. He said that out of the 14 rescued, seven were in the hospital. Shivakumar said the building was illegal and strict action will be taken in this matter.

“I have been told that there was no permission and illegal activities were going on. We will take strict action against the owner, contractors and everyone (of the alleged building). In the entire Bengaluru, we will see to it that we come up with a decision…wherever such illegal constructions are going on, we will stop it immediately. I will conduct a big survey on this,” he told reporters here.

“We will stop all these illegal constructions and I will also instruct the registrars to not accept the transfer of such illegal properties which have no plan sanctions. We will take strict action against this,” the deputy chief minister added.

When Will It Stop Raining?

According to the met department, Bengaluru is likely to receive rainfall till October 25. From October 26, the city will witness cloudy skies. The maximum temperature will settle around 28 degrees Celsius and minimum will hover around 20 degrees Celsius.

Following the rain fury in Bengaluru, the Karnataka government has asked residents of a few apartments to relocate for eight days as rainwater has inundated the premises endangering the safety of the residents.

Commenting on the rain wreaking havoc in the state, especially in Bengaluru, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Tuesday stated “Instructions have been given to close some apartment complexes for eight days in Bengaluru”. Shivakumar was responding to questions from the media near his residence in Bengaluru on Tuesday.
