Delhi: As Diwali approaches, several areas in the national capital are bracing for water shortages due to high ammonia levels in the Yamuna River. The Delhi Jal Board has announced a limited water supply, effective until Friday, November 1, impacting various regions across the city.
Areas Affected by Water Supply Limitations
The restricted water supply will primarily affect parts of East, Northeast, and South Delhi, as well as regions under the New Delhi Municipal Council. The Delhi Jal Board has provided a list of specific areas that may experience shortages, which includes:

Reasons for Water Supply Restrictions
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the Delhi Jal Board explained that the limited water supply is due to maintenance work on the Upper Ganga Canal, which is a key source for the Bhagirathi and Sonia Vihar Water Treatment Plants (WTPs). “Due to maintenance on the Upper Ganga Canal, Bhagirathi and Sonia Vihar WTPs are operating at 30 percent capacity, relying temporarily on the Yamuna,” the board stated. They expressed regret over the inconvenience this situation may cause during the festive season.
The board also noted an increase in ammonia levels in the Yamuna’s raw water, which have risen to over 1.5 ppm, complicating the treatment process. As a result, the production capacity of the Bhagirathi and Sonia Vihar WTPs has been significantly reduced.
