Pro Pickleball Champion Armaan Bhatia has a soft spot for Chinese food
Pickleball fever has been taking over India and though a relatively new sport, it’s become a worldwide sensation. A fast-paced sport combining elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, Pickleball is a new challenge that athletes all over the world are rising up to meet. In India, Armaan Bhatia has emerged as the top contender and the 25-year-old from Mumbai has been wowing spectators with his skills.
Recently, Bhatia has been on a winning streak, emerging victories in all three of his finals at the first flagship pickleball event held in New Delhi earlier this week. Having turned pro just over a year ago, Bhatia has risen through the ranks at astonishing speed and is now the number one ranked player in India, competing globally.
Times Now caught up with Armaan Bhatia to find out more about what his days look like and how he stays in peak performance mode through food.
How did you first get into sports, and what in particular drew you to pickleball?
Sports were always part of my life in one way or another. My grandfather played cricket at the Ranji level for Mumbai, my uncle played tennis for India and Hong Kong, and my parents were also state and national-level badminton players. So, I’ve always been around sports. In 2020, between the first and second lockdowns, I began playing pickleball casually at my club, Khar Gymkhana, and in 2023, I decided to take it seriously and go pro.
Competing at a global level must be pretty demanding. What does a typical day look like for your diet, and how do you maintain peak performance?
A typical day starts early; I wake up around 6 to 6:30 am. I practise intermittent fasting, usually for 16 to 18 hours. I only eat from around 11:30 am or noon until 6 pm. My window varies depending on the timing. For instance, if my last meal is at 6, I resume eating around 11 or 12 the next day. My go-to meals are protein-heavy, like grilled dishes, particularly chicken. I’m currently avoiding gravies and sugar, and I haven’t even had butter chicken despite being in Delhi right now.
On cheat days or off-season, what’s your favourite indulgence?
It’s definitely sugar, especially chocolate. I love Chantilly Nutella Brookies and could probably have a couple of those on a cheat day.
Which are your favourite restaurants, and where might we usually find you?
Good question! I like House of Mandarin in Bandra, and I’m also a fan of Lyla in BKC. Ming Yang and The Lantern are also favourites. I tend to enjoy Asian and Mexican cuisine, especially Chinese and Mexican dishes.
Do you enjoy cooking, or is that something you don’t typically engage in?
I can manage the basics—I can cook dal, rice, and pasta for myself—but that’s about it. I wouldn’t do much more even if I were at home.
How does food impact your performance, both mentally and physically, on and off the court?
It plays a huge role. My protein intake is higher, which significantly aids recovery. Performance-wise, I notice a big difference; I feel less sore and recover faster, which is essential.
Would you have any advice for people looking to manage cravings or follow a healthier diet?
Absolutely. I’ve found that getting enough sleep helps with food cravings. When I’m well-rested, I don’t crave food as much. Rest, along with good nutrition, can make it easier to follow a healthier diet.
After a match, what is your go-to recovery meal?
I try to get enough protein, mainly through meats, to aid muscle recovery.
When travelling internationally for matches, do you like to try local dishes?
I don’t usually explore local dishes as it can be difficult to follow my diet while travelling. Also I tend to avoid eating out because I don’t want to risk getting sick.
Are there any meals from your childhood that you still love to indulge in?Yes, chicken biryani. Specifically, the one my mum makes at home. It wouldn’t really be made for any special occasions and things, just on a regular day and it’s my favourite.
