With the tenth episode of Only Murders in the Building, it was finally time for the killer of Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch) to face the music. Charles Hayden-Savage (Steve Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short), and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) confront the dastardly murderer, who also took out Glen Stubbins (Paul Rudd) to cover up his secret. Co-created by Steve and John Hoffman, Only Murders in the Building features Arconia residents Charles, Oliver, and Mabel, who solve a murder each season on their crime podcast of the same name. Let’s break down how the trio solved this season’s murder. Warning: SPOILERS AHEAD!!
Sazz’s killer is finally unmasked
In the ninth episode, the trio figured out that their main suspect was Sazz’s protégé Rex, played by Pachinko’s Jin Ha, who also killed fellow stuntman Glen. But why did he go after his mentor? The season finale explained that it all had to do with a script. The other big reveal of this season was that Rex was actually Marshall P Pope, screenwriter of the Hollywood film based on the Arconia and the Only Murders podcast. Both he and Sazz wanted to become screenwriters; Sazz because she was looking for a career upgrade and more respect, while Rex wanted to earn the respect of his father.
Realising that Rex was unreliable as a stuntman, Sazz stopped promoting him. But he betrayed her by stealing her script on Charles and his podcast. When she found out the truth and was about to tell Charles the night of his Broadway debut, Rex pulled the trigger from across the west wing of the Arconia. Charles, Oliver, and Mabel get him to confess everything, but before he can try to evade them, Rex is shot just like he killed Sazz. This time, it’s escaped prisoner Jan (Amy Ryan) who offs him to take revenge for her love, Sazz. That shuts the case on the murder of Sazz Pataki for season 4.
New case for Season 5
The season finale also sees the beautiful wedding of Oliver and Loretta Durkin (Meryl Streep), who say ‘I do’ in the Arconia courtyard. Their wedding is attended by Charles, Mabel, their respective sons, and plenty of the regulars from the Upper West Side building. The trio barely have a moment to recover from Oliver and Loretta’s happy ending when they come upon another death.
It’s their doorman, Lester (Teddy Coluca), who lies in a pool of his own blood in the building fountain. Who could have killed the helpful old man who worked for the Arconia? The comedy series introduces a mysterious woman (Téa Leoni) who asks the gang for help in locating her missing husband. She believes it has something to do with the Arconia as well. Lester’s death and the missing man are likely linked in some way, and the Emmy-nominated series will return in 2025.
