President-elect Donald Trump has picked South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem as his secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), several publications cited sources to report on Tuesday. The 52-year-old, who earlier this year faced heat over her admission about fatally shooting her dog Cricket, will be joining two key immigration hardliners in Trump’s cabinet – Stephen Miller and Tom Homan.

Noem made history as South Dakota’s first female governor after her election in 2018 and her re-election in 2022. She was also in the race to become Trump’s running mate. However, she faced severe criticism after her book ‘No Going Back’ was published. The 52-year-old admitted to killing her 14-month-old dog.

“Cricket was a wirehair pointer, about 14 months old,” she wrote, further adding that the dog had an “aggressive personality” and needed to be trained to be used for hunting pheasant.

Even after JD Vance was picked over her, Noem kept on campaigning for Trump. She also spoke at the Republican National Convention.

The South Dakota governor’s new role at DHS will see her tackling the country’s widespread immigration issues. Donald Trump has vowed to conduct the largest ‘mass deportation drive’ in US history. Noem will work alongside Tom Homan, who has been chosen as the ‘border czar’, and Stephen Miller, who will be the White House deputy chief of staff for policy.

Unlike Homan and Miller, Noem’s appointment requires Senate confirmation.
