Asheville, North Carolina seems to be the worst-hit town after Hurricane Helene. The settlement lying in the Blue Ridge Mountains is submerged under water and is facing a major power and water outage. Flights to and from Asheville airport have been canceled as Delta and United Airlines announced that they will be able to resume operation only on Monday.
A North Carolina county that includes Asheville reported that 30 people were killed due to the storm, pushing the overall death toll to over hundred people across several states. Buncombe County Manager Avril Pinder pledged that she would have food and water into Asheville by Monday.
“We hear you. We need food and we need water,” Pinder said. “My staff has been making every request possible to the state for support and we’ve been working with every single organization that has reached out. What I promise you is that we are very close.”
Meanwhile, Asheville mayor Esther Manheimer urged residents to save water. In a statement to News 13, she said that water is the biggest issue right now. She added that the issue is that there has been a loss of the feeder pipes into the city.
“We don’t want people to assume that’s going to happen quickly we need to make sure people understand that this is something they should plan for long term. They need to keep water for drinking, for flushing toilets, for things like that – Don’t assume this is going to end anytime soon,” she said.
Asheville Regional Airport spokesperson Tina Kinsey told Citizen Times that Delta and United Airlines plan to resume flying Monday morning. American Airlines is hoping to resume with arriving/terminating flights on Sunday.
