Guwahati: The floods in Assam have affected 11.5 lakh people across 23 districts. The death toll has reached 48, as per PTI. Rescue and relief efforts are currently underway in the state. The Chief Minister has also directed efforts to ensure that wildlife is not harmed.

The floods in Assam have affected 11.5 lakh people across 23 districts as the water level of major level, including the Brahmaputra and its tributaries crosses the danger mark, PTI reported citing an official report.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared a video on X which showed him interacting with people while relief efforts were underway.

“Resilience of the people of Assam is our biggest strength and it shows in times like these when we collectively commit to overcome the challenges posed by the floods,” the CM wrote in the post on X.

The death toll in this year’s floods, landslides and storms has reached 48, the report said.

On Tuesday, the Chief Minister visited the Golaghat district, visited various flood-hit areas, interacted with the population, and held meetings with officials to plan and provide relief and rehabilitation.

Embankments, roads, bridges and infrastructure have suffered damage in the districts most affected by the floods, the report said.

According to the report by PTI, the districts affected by floods included Barpeta, Biswanath, Cachar, Charaideo, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kamrup Metropolitan, Karbi Anglong, Karimganj, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, Tamulpur, Tinsukia and Udalguri districts.

Lakhimpur is the worst hit with over 1.65 lakh people being affected. It is followed by Darrang with more than 1.47 lakh people and Golaghat with almost 1.07 lakh people being affected by floodwater, as per the official report.

The floods have also hit Kaziranga National Park, with wildlife having being affected by the same.

The Chief Minister also directed the authorities to take adequate measures, including regulation of traffic on the national highway, to ensure that wildlife is not harmed, PTI reported.

The administration, SDRF, NDRF, Emergency Services and Indian Air Force are undertaking rescue and relief operations in different parts of Assam.

As per PTI, over 2.90 lakh people have been sheltered in 490 relief camps set up by the various district administrations.
