KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Azhar Mahmood has hit out at the false allegations
  • He plans to take legal action against those spreading false narrative
  • Azhar is Pakistan’s assistant coach

Pakistan had a forgettable run in the 2024 T20 World Cup and they crashed out from the league stage of the ICC event. The Men in Green only managed 2 wins from 4 matches in the league stage to finish at the third spot. The defeat against the USA proved costly to Pakistan.

The defeat at the hands of India further dented Pakistan’s chances and they failed to qualify for the second round. The Pakistan cricket fraternity has been slamming the team and some of the former players haven’t shown any mercy to the players.

Several rumours are also viral on social media and Azhar Mahmood, the assistant coach of Pakistan, has decided to clear the air. The former Pakistan all-rounder took to X to hit out at “false allegations” and he plans to take legal action against those spreading it.

“I have heard some false allegations and narratives circulating on social media and other media platforms. I categorically state that these allegations are entirely baseless and false, and it is extremely upsetting to hear them,” Mahmood wrote on X.

“This culture of falsely accusing and misleading people to believe a false narrative is now getting ridiculous and dangerous. Speaking without evidence and misconstruing facts is a criminal offence, and those engaging in such behaviour will be dealt with through legal action.”

It remains to be seen if Azhar will take legal action against those accusing him and the Pakistan cricket team. It was the first time since 2021 that the Men in Green failed to qualify for the second round.

Under Babar Azam, Pakistan made it to the semi-final of the 2021 T20 World Cup. They lost to Australia in the knockout game. In 2022, Pakistan qualified for the final. The 2009 T20 WC Champions lost to England in the summit clash.

Babar Azam to lose captaincy?

There could be another change in Pakistan’s T20I captaincy after their below-par run in the 2024 T20 WC. Babar stepped down as Pakistan’s all-format captain after they failed to qualify for the semi-final of the 2023 ODI WC.

Shaheen Afridi took over as the T20I captain but was sacked after just one series. The PCB’s decision to reappoint Babar as captain didn’t work and they failed to make it to the second round. Shan Masood is the present Test captain of Pakistan. Pakistan do not have a designated captain in ODIs since the 2023 WC.
