Brembo Acquires Öhlins Racing For €370 Million In Landmark Deal
Brembo NV has announced the acquisition of Swedish suspension company Öhlins Racing AB for €370 million ($405 million), representing the Italian company’s most significant purchase to date. The deal, disclosed on last Friday, involves Brembo’s acquisition of Öhlins from Tenneco, which is owned by Apollo Global Management Inc.
According to Brembo’s Executive Chairman, Matteo Tiraboschi, the acquisition aligns well with the company’s strategy, with Öhlins’ strong brand identity and established reputation complementing Brembo’s existing portfolio. This move is part of Brembo’s ongoing efforts to broaden its presence in the motorcycle and motorsport sectors, following other recent acquisitions, such as Denmark’s SBS Friction and Spain’s J.Juan in 2021. Brembo also owns Marchesini, a company known for producing lightweight alloy wheels, further solidifying its footprint in the industry.
The acquisition comes shortly after Brembo divested its minority stake in Pirelli & C. SpA, quelling speculation about a possible merger between the two firms. Brembo, based in Bergamo, Italy, is renowned for supplying high-performance brake systems for prestigious car manufacturers, including Ferrari NV and Porsche Automobil Holding SE.
Established in 1976, Öhlins Racing is a significant player in the suspension market, employing roughly 500 individuals at its production facilities located in Sweden and Thailand. The company’s offerings include shock absorbers, front forks, and software for various high-performance applications. Moreover, Öhlins serves as a supplier to major motorsport competitions such as Formula 1 and NASCAR.
The Swedish company anticipates annual revenue of approximately $144 million, with an adjusted EBITDA margin projected between 21% and 22%. The completion of the acquisition is subject to regulatory approvals, which are expected to be finalized by early next year. This acquisition marks a strategic step in Brembo’s expansion in the competitive world of motor racing and advanced suspension technology.
