Chennai Braces for Week-Long Rain and Thunderstorms as Monsoon Set to Persist: Check IMD Forecast (Representative Image)

Chennai: Tamil Nadu’s capital will received heavy rainfall the entire week, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. On Wednesday, October 2, there will be a moderate rainfall with a possibility of thunderstorm. Though there will be partly cloudy sky, the maximum temperature will be 34 degrees Celsius, and the minimum will be 27 degrees. Meanwhile, this year’s northeast monsoon, expected to begin in the third week of October, is likely to bring above-average rainfall to Tamil Nadu.
According to the IMD predictions, the entire week will see moderate rain or thunderstorm with cloudy sky. The temperature may vary from 34 to 35 degrees Celsius. However, residents will welcome the next week with intensified rain. On October 7 and 8, the weather department has predicted rain.
“While northern Tamil Nadu is expected to receive more rain, southern Tamil Nadu may experience normal or below-average rainfall,” said S. Balachandran, deputy director general of meteorology at the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai, quoted by Times of India. The southwest monsoon has already brought more rain than usual. Tamil Nadu and Puducherry recorded 39cm of rainfall, which is 18 per cent above the average.
“Seventeen districts, including Tirunelveli, received higher rainfall, while 16 districts had normal amounts. Six districts in the delta region, except Thanjavur and Pudukottai, recorded less rainfall during the southwest monsoon,” Balachandran added. Chennai recorded 43 per cent more rainfall than usual.

Residents should stay careful as heavy rain may cause waterlogging on roads.
