Costco Salad Recall Affected 16 States (Photo credit: Unsplash)
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) earlier this month updated its recall notice for a thousand units of a Costco salad product because of the ‘presence of undeclared allergens’. The classification was raised to the agency’s highest risk level – ‘Class I’. The warehouse retailer first recalled about 1,000 Grain + Celery salads because they were mislabeled as Ancient Grain + Vegetable salads.
Newsweek cited a notice from the FDA to report that the product was incorrectly labeled ‘Ancient Grain + Vegetable Salad item #25247’. It was actually ‘Grain + Celery Salad with Apple Cider Vinaigrette item #47492’. According to the report, the product contains almond and soy, two major allergens, but the label on the packaging does not mention that.
This comes a month after Costco issued a voluntary recall in July for 958 units of the products. On August 7, the recall was expanded to ‘Class I’.
The 16 states impacted by the recall include: Georgia, Florida, New Jersey, Texas, Montana, California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Connecticut, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. Costco has asked customers with soy and almond allergies to return the product for a full refund.
“If you’re allergic to Soy or Almonds do not consume this product, please return it to Costco for a full refund,” the company said in a letter, according to the Newsweek report. The wholeseller added that the mislabeling poses a serious risk of a life-threatening reaction.
