More About Vytautas Kasiulis And His Artworks

Kasiulis, who died in 1995, became an emblem of what the country lost to the Soviet occupation. Born in 1918, Kasiulus left Lithuania for Germany in 1944, where he spent some time before making his way to France in 1948. Many modern art museums in different parts of the world – including France, USA, Canada, Britain, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, Germany, Argentina, and Australia – continue to preserve the works of this artist who was hailed as one of the most interesting painters.

His works are a true representation of his culture and full of Lithuanian symbols. He painted Moulin Rouge, the streets of Montmartre, the famous performances of the musicians of Paris.

While living in Paris, Kasiulis developed a stylistic manner characteristic of his work, characterized by a virtuosic play of lines, refined harmonies of color, glowing colors and light playful stylization of shapes. Many who have written about Kasiulis’ work have compared him to Raoul Duffy, Georges Rouault, Marc Chagall and other famous painters of the cole de Paris, emphasizing his individuality and the authenticity of his talent.

After the death of the artist his family gifted a big collection of his work to the Lithuanian National Museum of Art.

Now, with this exhibition in Vasant Vihar, art enthusiasts in Delhi are getting a chance to witness the magic of his work and Lithuanian expression.
