hyderabad woman's death after eating momos prompts crackdown on stalls across city

Hyderabad: The death of a 29-year-old woman and the deteriorating health of over 50 people, allegedly due to eating momos in Hyderabad, have prompted a city-wide inspection by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). Earlier, an inspection was conducted at the roadside momos stall in Banjara Hills, which reportedly served spoiled food to customers. The investigation revealed that the vendor did not have an FSSAI licence and was preparing food in an unhygienic space. The Food Safety Wing of GHMC discovered that several cases of food poisoning were reported from the same location.

Some stalls operating under the names “WOW Hot Momos” and “Delhi Hot Momos” also caused food poisoning to 13 people who were admitted to Swathi Hospital and Tanvir Hospital. Food safety officials visited the two hospitals, spoke with the 13 patients, and consulted their doctors to fully understand the situation, according to a report by Siasat.

During its city-wide inspection on Tuesday, GHMC checked 110 momo stalls in Hyderabad to ensure compliance with food safety standards. They collected a total of 69 samples and sent them for testing to verify compliance with health and safety regulations.

Hyderabad Momos Death

Earlier this week, a woman named Reshma died, leaving behind her husband and three children, after consuming momos from a street vendor in Nandi Nagar, Banjara Hills. Her body was sent for post-mortem examination (PME). Banjara Hills Police have registered a case regarding the incident. According to locals, nearly 50 to 60 people became ill after eating momos from this vendor. The situation escalated when children complained of vomiting and nausea, leading an angry mob to apprehend the accused vendor and hand him over to the police.

“We have collected samples of food articles from the location and sent them to the state food laboratory for analysis. We have also issued orders to stop operations. The blood culture and stool test reports of the victims **have been gathered** to determine the exact cause of the food poisoning,” a food safety official stated earlier.
