importance of following up with recruiter after a job interview

Preparing for a job interview, appearing for it, waiting for the results of a job interview – all of this can be a very demanding and exhausting process. What adds to the worries of a candidate is when they do not hear back from a recruiter.

A candidate needs to realise two things here. Firstly, the interview process is a long-winding one and the recruiter may not be able to give a prompt response. So, do not let pessimistic thoughts wander in your head. Secondly, it is very important for every job candidate to understand the art of following up with a recruiting manager.

A lot of times people are able to bag the second round of the interview or are able to get the job just because they followed up with the recruiting manager.

Send a thank you note

Candidates can always send a thank you note to the recruiter on a prompt basis. Once the interview gets over, you can always draft a lovely thank you note detailing your experience about the interview and send it across to the recruiter. This always gives a very nice impression and chances are that your recruiting manager will have your name in the back of their mind even when they are interviewing other people for the same job role.

Follow up for an update

After considerable time has passed since you interviewed with a particular company, you can always send a message to the recruiting manager asking them if there is any update for you. This will help you get a clear picture and you will also know how many more days you will have to wait to get the closure.

Express interest in the job role

Let’s see even if there is a change in the state quo and you have received another offer letter from another company. You can always send a mail across to the recruiting manager conveying the same and asking them to tell you about the result on an immediate basis so that you can make up your mind.

Ask them for feedback

If you’ve not heard from the recruiting manager for a very long time, you can always ask them for the feedback. From asking what your shortcomings were, how you were in the interview to why you were not selected — answers to all these questions can help you prepare better for the future.
