With its rich culinary heritage, Lucknow has become a major hotspot for foodies. From kebabs to biryani, you will get every mouthwatering delicacy here from the iconic Awadhi cuisine. The city’s old-world charm and laid-back pace along with the delectable food has also impressed many Bollywood celebrities including Imtiaz Ali. Recently, the renowned director with his brother and Sajid Ali who is known for films like Rockstar and Laila Majnu, embarked on a delicious journey through the city, experiencing Lucknow’s legendary flavours firsthand.
Imtiaz shared glimpses of their food adventure on his Instagram Stories, capturing his brother Sajid in the midst of Lucknow’s hearty food scene. In one photo, Sajid can be seen patiently waiting in a queue at the iconic Bajpayee Kachori Bhandar in Hazratganj, a famous spot for locals and tourists alike. Known for its crispy kachoris served with spicy chole, the Bajpayee Kachori Bhandar offers a hearty serving at a mere ₹40. Imtiaz’s playful caption read, “Director of the iconic film Laila Majnu in a long queue for kachori in Lucknow. World-class 2 kachoris and chholay at Rs 40,” capturing the essence of the brothers’ fun, no-frills food tour.
Of course, no visit to Lucknow is complete without savouring its iconic biryani. Following the unspoken rule of Awadhi cuisine, Imtiaz visited Idrees Biryani, a popular eatery that’s been a go-to for biryani lovers for decades. Known for its rich, flavourful mutton biryani with tender pieces of meat and fragrant spices, Idrees Biryani is a hidden gem, beloved by locals as well as tourists. Although Imtiaz didn’t reveal what he ordered, the behind-the-scenes snap hinted at the possibility of a delicious meal. The caption included a “Wow” GIF, letting his followers imagine the mouth-watering experience.
However, this is not Imtiaz’s first visit to Lucknow’s food scene. Earlier in January, the director also enjoyed a memorable food tour through the city’s bustling streets. On that trip, he shared a plate of chana puri—a popular Lucknowi combo of fluffy puris with spicy chana sabzi, garnished with fried green chillies, onion slices, and radishes. The director captioned it, “The best of Lucknow!!!” giving his followers a taste of his admiration for the city’s culinary treasures.
