  • India’s 12-year world record streak has ended
  • India are 2-0 down in the series

The Indian cricket team hit a new low on Saturday (October 26) after a humiliating defeat against New Zealand at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune in the second Test of the three-match series. The result meant that India are 2-0 down in the three-match series, with one of the greatest streaks in cricket history coming to an end.

This series is the first Team India has lost on home soil in 12 years, with the last defeat coming as far back as 2012, when England defeated a MS Dhoni-led side 2-1 in a four-match Test series. Since then, India had won 18 series in a row, which was the world record for most consecutive home series defeats in a row. No other team has won more than 10 Test series in a row at home, a feat achieved by Australia twice (1994 to 2000 and 2004 to 2008).

This is also the first time in history that New Zealand has beaten India in a Test series on Indian soil. Prior to this tour, the Black Caps had only won two Tests in history in India, with the last victory coming in 1987. Earlier, New Zealand beaten India in the series opener in Bengaluru.

This is only the fourth time in the 21st century that India has lost a home series after South Africa (2000), Australia (2004), and England (2012).

How India Lost Pune Test?

New Zealand won the toss and put up a modest total of 259 on the board, with Washington Sundar running havoc with a seven-wicket haul. Meanwhile, India’s batting unit collapsed in reply and was bowled out for just 156 runs, with no player making more than Ravindra Jadeja’s 38 runs.

New Zealand posted a total of 255 in the first innings, with Sundar taking four wickets and Jadeja chipping with three scalps. In reply, Yashasvi Jaiswal gave the hosts a quick-fire start with a knock of 77 but failed to get support from any other batter apart from a fighting knock of 42 from Jadeja.
