kota coaching culture promotes rote memorisation and is a wrong way to help children: narayana murthy

Infosys founder, Narayana Murthy criticized the pertaining coaching culture, particularly Kota coaching culture. He said that coaching classes is a wrong way of helping children and is not effective. Murthy strongly criticised the educational methods adopted by coaching centers and said that they promote rote memorisation over conceptual understanding. Referring to the high-pressure and intense learning atmosphere, Narayana Murthy said- “Kota is the wrong way”.

Infosys founder Narayana Murthy was speaking at the launch of Paul Hewitt’s 13th edition of Conceptual Physics in Bengaluru. He said that he doesn’t beleive in the coaching culture and stressed on an education format that promotes observation, analysis and testing skills in the students.

“The focus has been on rote learning…and that doesn’t help us relate what we learn in the class to real-world problems,” said Narayana Murthy.

He also pointed out that students who attend external classes tend to not listen to their school teachers in the classroom and they don’t follow the school curriculum.

“As we work to strengthen STEM education in India, it is essential that our students have access to world-class learning resources. ‘Conceptual Physics’ by Paul G Hewitt is a prime example, emphasising conceptual understanding and real-world applications to make physics more relatable,” said Narayana Murthy.

Naryana Murthy further backed his point by sharing how he and his wife, Sudha Murty, created a learning environment at home for their two children, Akshata Murty and Rohan Murty. “The best way to create an environment of learning for our children is for us to read something between 6:30 PM and 8:30 PM and then after dinner,” Murthy said.
