Residents of Delhi-NCR woke up to ‘very poor’ air quality, with some areas recording ‘severe’ levels on the first day of the week, following a Sunday when the capital’s air quality hovered close to the ‘severe’ category. The overall Air Quality Index (AQI) on Sunday stood at 382, marking it as the worst in the country for that day. The deteriorating air conditions raised concerns, with pollution levels attributed to factors like vehicular emissions, crop stubble burning in neighbouring states, and stagnant weather conditions. Despite the temporary relief provided by the winds, Delhi saw a spike in pollution levels following Diwali, with a noticeable jump recorded on Sunday.

Delhi News LIVE: Over 54,000 Vehicles Fined, 56 Construction Sites Shut
The Centre’s panel to improve air quality in Delhi-NCR on Sunday said it ordered the closure of 56 construction and demolition sites and imposed fines on 597 sites for failing to comply with pollution control norms between October 15 and 31. In a statement, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) said over 54,000 vehicles were penalised for lacking a valid pollution-under-control certificate, and 3,900 overage vehicles were impounded during the period.

A dispute over a business of flower garlands resulted in a man killing his brother-in-law in Delhi’s Sonia Vihar area on Sunday, police said. The deceased was identified as Hemant. He sustained 2 bullet injuries, one in the head and second in the left side of the chest. According to Delhi Police, “At 6:20 pm, a call regarding a firing incident was received at PS Khajuri Khas. On reaching the spot, it was found that two people, Ajay and Hemant had a heated argument about their business of making garland (mala). Ajay fired at Hemant and fled from the spot. Hemant was taken to hospital for treatment where he succumbed to his injury. Hemant sustained 2 bullet injuries, one in the head and 2nd in the left side of the chest. Investigation into the matter is in progress.”

Ahead of the Chhath Puja, Railway Board Chairman Satish Kumar on Sunday inspected facilities and said Railways are operating 195 special trains in 13 days from the Delhi area this year to facilitate the passengers. “We are operating extra trains as part of the arrangements. We are operating 195 special trains in 13 days from the Delhi area this year… Today, 70 trains are running from Delhi, of which 16 are special trains, and 4 trains are unannounced. Through these measures, we are trying to provide facilities to the passengers. I asked passengers about the arrangements, they are satisfied with the arrangements made this year,” Kumar told ANI.
