Sujata Saunik, a senior IAS officer, became Chief Secretary of Maharashtra on Sunday. Saunik became the first woman in the state’s 64-year-old history to hold the top post, PTI reported.

An IAS officer of the 1987 batch, Sujata Saunik succeeds Nitin Kareer, who retired as the chief secretary on Sunday, as per PTI.

Saunik will hold the post for a year before retiring in June next year, an official said.

The post was handed over by Nitin Kareer to Sujata Saunik at a ceremony held at Mantralaya, the state secretariat in south Mumbai, on Monday evening.

Before her appointment as the state’s chief secretary, Sujata Saunik was the additional chief secretary in the state home department. As per PTI, her husband, Manoj Saunik, is also a former state chief secretary.

Sujata Saunik has three decades of public policy and governance experience in healthcare, finance, education, disaster management, and peacekeeping. As per PTI, she has experience in these areas at the district, state, and federal levels, and in international organisations as part of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and the United Nations (UN).
