Tattoo artist Friday Jones has been time and again hailed for the brilliant work that she is doing. She is known to help breast cancer survivors rewrite the narrative of their mastectomy scars with illustrative body art. Jones has been empowering breast cancer patients since a long time now and the emotional and psychological impact of her work has been creating waves.
Her work reached Oscar, Grammy, Tony and Olivier Award winners, and many high-profile individuals throughout the world. The most important bit – Jones has touched the hearts and minds of many, especially after she started working with post-operative cancer survivors.
While speaking to CNN, Jones explained that she started working with breast cancer patients in 2009. “A surgeon had come by and he said ‘Have you ever considered doing nipples?’ At that time, Jones had never heard of such a thing but what then unfolded changed her life.
“Oftentimes with mastectomy patients, they lose their entire nipple. That leaves their skin, very much like a barbie. This is when they literally use tattoos to replace nipples. Some women don’t opt for nipple tattoos. They feel like they have been really changed by the whole experience, and they opt for illustrative tattoos to cover their scars,” Jones explained.
The process starts by a consultation appointment. This gives Jones a chance to explore their lives. “It’s one of my favourite parts of the process,” Jones says. After the consultation, Jones and her team start drawing out their vision, making them feel like a sculpture or a work of art.
“We create a stencil, fit it to their bodies. And then we go to town,” Jones says.
Many of Jones’ clients spoke about how this process makes them feel alive. For them, it is not only empowering but a way of showcasing their pain – the pain that has got them where they are today.
