Omar Abdullah will be the next Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir National Conference leader Omar Abdullah, the Chief Minister-elect of Jammu and Kashmir, will take oath on October 16. This will be his second term as CM. In the first term, Omar was the chief minister of the erstwhile state between January 5, 2009 and January 8, 2015.

The ceremony is likely to be held at Raj Bhawan for Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar.

Farooq Abdullah has invited Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin for the swearing-in of Omar Abdullah. Due to the red alert issued and severe rain conditions in the state, CM MK Stalin will not be participating in the ceremony.

Kanimozhi Karunanidhi will be attending the event representing her party Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).

As per reports, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, M K Stalin, Uddhav Thackeray, Sharad Pawar, Akhilesh Yadav, Lalu Prasad Yadav, Arvind Kejriwal and D Raja are among those likely to get the invitations. Congress president president Mallikarjun Kharge and leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi are also expected to attend the oath ceremony.

The Abdullahs will also invite some family friends, especially the Badal family from Punjab.

Omar Abdullah’s Oath-Taking Ceremony

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Singh invited Omar Abdullah on Monday for oath-taking on October 16. The LG in his letter mentioned that he had received a letter from JKNC president Dr Farooq Abdullah on October 11, who informed that Omar Abdullah has been unanimously elected as Leader of the Legislature Party.

Earlier on October 11, National Conference leader Omar Abdullah staked claim to form the Jammu and Kashmir government. He met with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha at the Raj Bhavan with letters of support from various parties and Independent candidates.

“I’ve just come back after meeting LG Manoj Sinha at the Raj Bhavan. During the meeting, I submitted support letters from NC, Congress, CPI(M), AAP and independent candidates to the LG. I requested him to decide a date for the oath-taking ceremony at the earliest,” said JKNC vice president.

In the recently held assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the INDI alliance-led by JK National Conference won 49 seats, while BJP managed to win only 27 seats. Others won 9 seats.
