not just gautam gambhir! bcci interviews another ex-batter for india head coach role: report

India are all set to get a new head coach as Rahul Dravid will likely step down from his role after the T20 World Cup 2024. The favourite candidate to replace the Indian batting legend is none other than Gautam Gambhir, who is basking in the glory of guiding Kolkata Knight Riders to their third successful IPL title as their newly appointed mentor. According to several reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is currently interviewing Gambhir for the role. However, it looks like he is not the only candidate who is being interviewed by India’s apex cricketing body.

According to a report by News18, former India and Tamil Nadu batter, WV Raman is another candidate who has been interviewed by BCCI in addition to Gautam Gambhir. The report states that while Gambhir had a virtual interview with the Cricket Advisory Committee, Raman’s presentation was impressive and detailed. In fact, the CAC is likely to interview another overseas candidate on June 19 (Wednesday). However, Gambhir still has the edge over all others.

“Gambhir had a virtual interview but Raman’s presentation was very impressive and detailed. The CAC is likely to interview an overseas candidate tomorrow. Gambhir has the edge but Raman’s presentation was very thorough,” a source close to the proceedings said.

While the head coach is being appointed by the BCCI, the cricket body is not haveing separate discussions for the support staff, as the head coach ould like people he is comfortable with to join his team.

“Yes, the head coach has a big say in these appointments because he would want people he is comfortable working with. Having said that, it’s not that straightforward and BCCI too can propose their own candidates or people they think are ideal for the job. Ultimately it will be Gautam Gambhir, who is likely to become the coach, who would decide his team,” the source added.

New Selector Appointment In Full Swing

The BCCI had, in January, announced the vacancy for the position of a selector in the Ajit Agarkar-led panel, which is most likely to be vacated by Salil Ankola. The report in News18 says that the apex cricketing body of India has now called for candidates, who will most likely be from the North Zone.

In the current setup both Ajit Agarkar and Salil Ankola are from the West Zone, and the BCCI wants one representative from the North in their selection panel.
