A recent Reddit post has gone viral, shedding light on the struggles of finding empathy in today’s fast-paced work culture. A project manager at a small service-based company in the UK shared his personal crisis experience, which was met with a lack of support from his Indian managers.
Despite his dedication and key role in developing two niche products, including one ready for market launch, the project manager faced a challenging time when his mother was hospitalised. He requested flexible working hours to support her, but instead of receiving support, his manager called him in for a “performance review” and brought up unrelated past issues.
The project manager believes this was a classic case of the company trying to cut costs by removing its highest-paid employee. He expressed his disappointment, saying, “I’m not surprised by this behavior, given the ‘Awesome’ reputation of Indian managers.” However, he is determined to move forward and has already started applying for new jobs.
The post sparked a range of reactions from other Redditors, with some offering support and encouragement. One user commented, “Don’t worry, I’m sure things will be good, when one door closes there is always another door and often a better one. Good luck…” Another added, “Yes, all jobs seem to be gigs at this point. So instead of playing dishonest games, owners and managers should just say that they can’t afford you. Managing out by putting blame is really vile.”
However, someone in disagreement pointed out, “I am sorry but you cannot paint everyone with the same brush. Stereotyping Indians for being bad managers is absolutely unacceptable. I have had some amazing managers both Indian and otherwise who have guided me. It’s totally dependent on the person.”
