Chamoli: A 15-year-old along with his two minor friends have been arrested by police for allegedly planning theft at his house in Gopeshwar, Chamoli district in Dehradun. The incident occurred on the intervening nights of October 29-30, said police on Saturday.

The boy borrowed money from his friends to support his gaming habit; however, he was unable to repay the debt. He then conspired a plan with his friends to steal his mother’s jewellery in her absence to repay the loan.

Chamoli Superintendent of Police Sarvesh Panwar stated that his mother was at her relatives in Dehradun when the alleged incident took place. Panwar said, “On the night of the theft, the boy, who was with his mother in Dehradun, guided his friends via video call on where to find the safe containing his mother’s jewellery. Following his directions, the two friends opened the safe and took the jewellery home.”

The theft was discovered the next morning by a tenant, who noticed the broken lock and informed the boy’s mother. She immediately returned to Gopeshwar and found jewellery worth approximately ₹40 lakh missing from the safe.

Based on the mother’s complaint, a case was registered. During the investigation, police searched through 100 CCTV footage from the area, which led to the identification of the two boys involved.

The cops questioned the boys, who then confessed that they planned the theft at the request of their friend. Police then arrested the 15-year-old boy from Dehradun, who admitted to planning the theft to settle his debts. All three were presented before the juvenile justice board, which ordered them to a juvenile correctional facility.
