planet fitness trends after federal rule on easy gym membership cancellations

Planet Fitness was trending on social media after the Federal Trade Commission’s new rule on easy cancellation of subscription membership. The New Hampshire-based fitness franchise, with over 2400 clubs across the US, does not allow members to cancel membership over the phone or online. After the new rule effectively mandated single-click cancellation of subscription services, Planet a host of memes and posts were shared aimed at Planet Fitness.

However, before we go into them, what is this new rule? The FTC rolled out the new regulations on Monday which mandates one-click cancellation of subscriptions for services. It also proposed real human representatives instead of chatbots for credit card companies and banks. The new regulations were rolled out Monday but will be on varying timelines, with some taking weeks and others taking months to be implemented, administration officials said.

Here are some of the reactions to this regulation, which poked fun at Planet Fitness.

ABC News reported that the administration will urge health insurance companies to accept online claims submissions instead of requiring insured customers to print and mail forms.

“For a lot of services, it takes one or two clicks on your phone to sign up. It should take one or two clicks on your phone to end the service,” White House Domestic Policy Advisor Neera Tanden said.

“Essentially in all of these practices, the companies are delaying services to you or, really, trying to make it so difficult for you to cancel the service that they get to hold on to your money longer and longer,” Tanden said. “And what that means is, ultimately, consumers, the American public, is losing out.”
