The Mumbai selection committee took a bold call after the second round of the Ranji Trophy and dropped Prithvi Shaw from the squad. The out-of-favour India opener remained unbeaten on 39 in the chase to the target of 74 against Maharashtra. Despite that, the selectors dropped him and recalled Akhil Herwadkar.
Cricbuzz has revealed the reason behind the MCA taking this decision. ‘Dropped’ Shaw has been reportedly sent a warning and it isn’t confirmed whether he will return for the second game.
The report adds that Shaw doesn’t take net sessions seriously and attends them irregularly. Shaw, reportedly, skips two practice sessions for every session he attends. There are also question marks over his fitness.
It remains to be seen if Shaw will make his return to the squad for the fourth round or not. The timing of him losing his spot is very crucial as there’s a mega-auction for IPL 2025 next month. Delhi Capitals (DC) are unlikely to retain Shaw.
The former India U-19 World Cup-winning captain has been part of DC since his IPL debut in 2018 but he hasn’t been regular in the playing XI in the past few seasons. Shaw isn’t expected to go unsold in the mega-auction but his price could drop during the two-day event.
Shaw last played for India in 2021
Prithvi Shaw made a memorable India debut in the Test match against West Indies in 2018. The right-handed batsman kicked off his career with a ton and was bestowed with the Player of the Match award. He has only played 5 Tests, 6 ODIs and one T20I so far.
Shaw last played for India on the Sri Lanka tour in 2021. He made his return during the T20I series against New Zealand early in 2023 but remained on the bench. He isn’t in the scheme of things presently and wasn’t named in any of the Duleep Trophy squads.
