- You may have to wait a while to beat the queue by the Raju Uncle’s Chole Bhature is well worth the patience.
- The mononymous Burger in Camp has been serving up delights since 1989 and they’re still one of the most in-demand burgers in the city, holding their own against the modern fast food options.

- Koko Scoop is a delightful discovery for ice cream enthusiasts, renowned for its coconut ice cream that perfectly blends creaminess with the tropical flavour of coconut.
- Mahalakshmi Khaman Dhokla, also located in Camp, is a local favourite known for its soft and fluffy khaman dhokla. Once a street food stall, they’ve now expanded to a brick and mortar restaurant but still retain their much-loved quality.
- Cafe Goa is a delightful hidden gem that transports visitors to the coastal charm of Goa through its vibrant décor and delicious menu. Known for its seafood dishes and Goan curries, this café is the ideal spot for those craving a taste of the coast.
- We Idliwale is ideal for some South Indian breakfast fare (of course starting with some amazing idlis) but they also have a wide range of curries and mains inspired by regional South Indian home flavours.

- When exploring the dining scene in Pune, several restaurants have gained popularity yet may not live up to the hype, often leaving patrons underwhelmed.
- George Restaurant, for instance, is frequently crowded however, many diners have found the food to be inconsistent in quality as the years go on. Similarly, Blue Nile Restaurant is renowned for its biryani, yet numerous reviews suggest that it often falls short of expectations.
- Joshi Wadewale may attract crowds for its iconic vada pav, but it it’s not quite at the same level as some other spots in town. Cafe Buddha’s is another spot that has garnered attention but doesn’t always hit the mark.
- Lastly, German Bakery has become somewhat of a tourist hotspot, known for its baked goods and café-style atmosphere. Yet with its fame, it’s not quite the showstopper you would expect.

One of the best street food spots, in my opinion, is Ambika Sandwich in Sadashiv Peth, renowned for its exceptional grilled sandwiches. You simply must try their Peshwai Sandwich, and if you enjoy spicy flavours, the Corn Masala Sandwich is a must-try. These sandwiches are generously loaded with vegetables and cheese, complemented by their exquisite sauces that are sure to delight your taste buds.
2. What are your go-to hang out spots for food?
My all-time favourite restaurant is Bangalore Canteen, located in Karve Nagar. This establishment is renowned for its authentic South Indian cuisine. Two must-try dishes include the Ghee Garlic Onion Roast Dosa and the Ghee Pudi Thatte Idli. Both dishes are delicious and showcase the rich flavours of South Indian cooking.
3. Are there any hidden gems in Pune that you think deserve more attention?
In Pune, there are some hidden gems worth discovering. One such spot is White Cat Burgers in Bavdhan, a burger joint known for its fantastic chicken wings, including the Butter Chicken Wings and Korean BBQ Wings—both are must-tries. Another underrated place is Andebazz, located on Sinhagad Road, which specialises in delicious egg dishes. I highly recommend the Jwala Chicken Sandwich, Kachi Pakki Egg Bhurji, and Egg Wrap; these dishes truly deserve more recognition.
4. What are some of the most overrated meals you have tried?
An overrated spot in Pune is Vaishali, which, despite its popularity, does not stand out as much as other South Indian restaurants in the area. There are several lesser-known joints that offer better quality and more authentic South Indian cuisine, making them a more worthwhile choice for food lovers.
5. Which areas of Pune are best for exploring food?
For those keen on misal hunting, the Peth areas in Pune are a must-visit. These neighbourhoods are home to numerous traditional misal joints and snack centres, each offering their unique take on this beloved dish. Exploring these local eateries not only allows you to savour authentic flavours but also provides a glimpse into Pune’s rich culinary heritage.

There is this one hidden street food stall in Camp behind the Bank of India which opens in the evening and you get the best Kathi Rolls in Pune there. Apart from that Akhtar’s Samosa, JJ Garden in camp, Vishal Chaat Bhandar and A1 Pani Puri in Pimpri on Sai Chowk are the must-try street food spots in Pune.

Meanwhile, KP & Mekong Folks is a must-visit for sushi lovers, known for serving some of the best sushi in Pune. This quaint eatery combines fresh ingredients and expert techniques to create delightful sushi rolls that will satisfy any palate.

While Pune boasts a vibrant food scene, some popular spots may not live up to the hype. Vaishali, often praised for its South Indian cuisine, can be overcrowded and overpriced, leaving diners longing for a more authentic experience elsewhere. Wadeshwar, another well-known establishment, tends to draw in crowds with its casual vibe but may disappoint with its inconsistent food quality. Olympia is celebrated for its biryani, yet many find that the flavours do not match the excitement generated by its reputation.
