Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh paused his Wednesday night show in Germany and paid a touching tribute to the late industrialist Ratan Tata, following his death. The popstar was performing at ISS Dome in Dusseldorf, as part of his Dil-Luminati headline tour, when he decided to spare a moment mid-concert.

“You all know about Ratan Tata – he has passed away,” Dosanjh said in Punjabi. “This is my small tribute to him. Today, I feel it is important to take his name because of his life. He has always worked hard. Whatever I have heard and read of him, I have never seen him speak anything wrong about anyone.”

In no time, the artist’s homage for Tata made its way onto social media, where his Punjab-speaking fans translated the short speech into English for the rest of the world.

Resharing the video on X, a user named Gurpreet Garry Walia tweeted: “This is what Ratan Tata has earned. Diljit Dosanjh has spoken about Ratan Tata.”

The significance of the singer’s gestures wasn’t lost on people online, neither was the influence that the business mogul seemingly had.

“Diljit Dosanjh stopped his concert in Germany midway to pay his tributes to Ratan Tata who passed away last night. This is the legacy of the man, beyond the billions and trillions that he had, this is what he actually earned,” Roshan Rai, a vocal liberal, wrote.

It wasn’t the only public event that paused for a moment to honour and acknowledge the passing of Tata. A Garba night in Goregaon, Mumbai, observed a moment of silence shortly after the news came. Similar scenes unfolded at another Garba event in Ahmedabad, where people flashed their phone torches to do the same.

Ratan Naval Tata (1937-2024) died at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital at the age of 86. Noel Tata, his half-bother, is likely to be his successor.
