Jessel Taank believes there are a lot of stereotypes that surround Indians. The Real Housewives Of New York star recently spoke about how she became a victim of the belief herself on the show when she was accused of keeping things about her personal life, including being married to Pavit Randhawa under wraps.
Jessel Taank on stereotypes against Indians
During a conversation with Zoom, Jessel said, “I was largely misunderstood in the beginning. I talk about it a lot that when you look at Indians, there’s a very strong stereotype that surrounds us. We are doctors, and lawyers, and people don’t think of us having any hardships ever. We work so hard to get where we are. That’s kind of where this whole misunderstanding stemmed from. I was trying to talk about where I came from, my background, my parents, and everyone on the cast thought I was fabricating this story, which is crazy to me. I really had to prove myself.”
According to the 45-year-old, she had to make attempts at changing the perception. “I had to eradicate a lot of misconceptions. So, I was playing defence a lot. But, at the end of the day, truth always prevails. As people got to know me, they realised she is everything she’s saying she is,” she added.
Living in the age of social media
The fashion publicist also shared her thoughts on how being confident in your skin is needed when your life is out in the open due to reality TV. She shared, “You have to be comfortable with who you are. In the world of reality TV, the biggest thing is social media, and people commenting on your life, your story.”
For Jessel, getting used to all the negativity that comes along with social media was challenging. But, she managed. “For me it was very overwhelming at first, but I actually really love it now because it’s quite hilarious to think that someone believes they know you and feel comfortable enough to comment on your page or your life. You have to take it all with a grain of salt,” she added.
