Mumbai School Holiday Highlights: Schools and Colleges in Mumbai are closed today, September 26. School Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar, the guardian minister for Mumbai city, declared a holiday due to incessant rains. The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Mumbai and its adjoining districts Thane, Palghar, and Raigad till 8:30am on Thursday, September 26.
Following the incessant rains, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to announce a holiday for all schools and colleges on Thursday. All Mumbaikars are advised to remain indoors as a precautionary measures. Students and parents can contact the school administration for details.
IMD weather forecast has predicted isolated heavy rainfall is to continue in the region till September 27. Extremely heavy rainfall caused a landslide on the Mumbra bypass in Thane at 9:30pm on September 25. Bulletin issued by IMD indicates extremely heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds at isolated places to occur in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Ratnagiri districts over the next 24 hours. Mumbai Rains Update
India Meteorological Department said on Thursday that Pune reported “133.0 mm as the 3rd highest rainfall ever recorded”. This is also the highest for the month of September. Meanwhile, the IMD issued an “orange alert” for Mumbai City and Suburb on Thursday, predicting “thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and heavy to very heavy rainfall with gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph” in the area.
School Holiday Today: Puri Schools Closed Today
Puri district administration closed all schools within its jurisdiction for the safety of students. The state during the last 10 hours from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm has received an average of 26.3 mm rainfall with Boudh recording the highest 46 mm downpour followed by 29 mm Chandbali, 26.3 mm in Bhubaneswar, 25.4 mm in Nuapada, 25 mm each in Khurda and Jajpur.

IMD Director Sunil Kamble says, “Till yesterday afternoon orange alert was issued for Mumbai. But with the monsoon intensifying we issued a red alert till 8:30 am this morning. As soon as we issued a red alert we saw that more than 200 mm of rain was registered in the regions of Mumbai. Today, we have issued an orange alert for Mumbai. From today orange alert has been issued for a lot of districts and from tomorrow green and yellow alert will be issued. In the next 5-6 monsoon will reduce and there are chances that monsoon will withdraw till October 5…Red alert has been issued for Palghar…”

In view of the ‘red alert’ issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), schools and colleges will remain closed, said Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). “The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for Mumbai, till tomorrow morning 8.30 am. In view of this, all schools and colleges in Mumbai have been declared a holiday for tomorrow Thursday, 26 September 2024,” the official notice reads.
