Star Health Insurance suffered a major data breach, exposing personal details of over 31 million customers.
Telegram, the controversial messaging platform, told an Indian court that it won’t be able to probe every chatbot on its platform for possible data leaks. Allegations of a massive breach involving India’s largest health insurer, Star Health, had come to light. While struggling to cope with a business and reputation decline, the embarrassed insurer has faced a fallout in the wake of data leak reports in September. The leaked data included sensitive customer information like medical claim details and biometric IDs that went out through a hacker on Telegram chatbots. But in response to the platform-wide monitoring appeal by Star Health, Telegram reiterated that such policing would breach Indian regulations, saying it would only delete flagged content.
Star Health’s Appeal for Assistance
Star Health, suffering severely from the breach, had approached Madras High Court last month, seeking orders directing Telegram to cease functioning relating to the leaked data. In Friday’s hearing, Star Health was instructed to name precisely which chatbots were problematic so Telegram could act quickly and prevent them from functioning. Telegram, while refusing any direct policing role, suggested a high degree of cooperation with Star Health to delete specific reported instances of data misuse. This breach has sent the company’s shares 11% lower since the emergence of the scandal.
Telegram’s Scrutiny and Global Challenges
Telegram now faces greater problems around the world after its founder, Pavel Durov, was formally investigated by French authorities for allegedly assisting illicit actions on the platform. Telegram and Durov have denied these allegations, guaranteeing a firm commitment to dealing with the criticisms and better maintaining the platform. Meanwhile, Telegram’s counsel argued that Indian legislation now prohibits general policing of content.
Investigation of Internal Allegations
Star Health has initiated an internal inquiry into allegations that its Chief Security Officer may have played a role in leaking information. Reportedly, the officer has been cooperative, and no evidence for misconduct extends so far. As the hearing has now been adjourned for two weeks, both parties are closely watched as Star Health is working towards recovery from the breach and restoration of customer trust.
