NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, who is stuck aboard the International Space Station (ISS), has undergone an eye test. Williams, along with colleague Butch Wilmore, is stationed in the ISS after their Boeing Starliner aircraft experienced a malfunction. Initially planned as an eight-day expedition in space, the earliest possible return for the duo now is February 2025.
Humans staying in space for prolonged periods experience Spaceflight Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome (SANS) – or problems with one eyesight on account of being in space. Microgravity in space affects fluid distribution in the eye, which causes blurred vision and changes in the structure of the eye.
However, Sunita Williams’ tests were not because she was experiencing any problems or health issues. it was a routine eye test that she, Wilmore and the rest of the crew underwent. The comprehensive examination involved tests on her cornea, retina and lens. The results were monitored by NASA from the earth. The tests were to better understand the potential effects of long-duration space flights, NASA said.

The Starliner experienced multiple thruster failures and helium leaks, which have delayed the return of Williams and Butch Wilmore, NASA is considering several options, including bringing them back on SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft, but this could take up to eight more months, at least.
However, NASA said that there could be an issue with spacesuits in the event of a possible return in the Dragon aircraft, as Starliners’ spacesuits are not compatible with those of SpaceX. NASA, however, added that spacesuits could be sent around the time of return via an outgoing SpaceX vessel.
