Virat Kohli made a shocking announcement after the 2024 T20 World Cup final and quit the shortest format of the game. Virat made the announcement while speaking with Harsha Bhogle after being bestowed with the Player of the Final award. Virat played a crucial 76-run in the final. Rajkumar Sharma, Virat’s childhood coach, has reacted to his retirement. Speaking to Star Sports, Rajkumar appreciated his student for making way for the youngsters.

“It is a very big decision that Virat has taken, that too at such a big moment where India has won the T20 World Cup. He also won the Player of the Match in the final which is the highest point for any player. I appreciate his decision as he wants the youngsters to get more chances and so it is a good decision,” Rajkumar said.

“The advantage of this decision is that he will now be able to focus more on his favourite format, that is Test cricket. He has done well in that format and I feel he will concentrate more there and bring more laurels to the country.”

Virat made his T20I debut in 2010 under Suresh Raina’s captaincy against Zimbabwe. The right-handed batsman was the vice-captain of the team on his debut.

Virat replaced MS Dhoni as India’s ODI and T20I captain in January 2017. He captained India in the 2021 T20 World Cup. The Men in Blue struggled in the tournament and crashed out from the league stage.

Virat stepped down following the ICC event and played under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy in the 2022 and 2024 T20 World Cup. Virat was the highest run-scorer in T20I cricket for a long time.

He is now at the second spot. The 35-year-old finished his T20I career with 4188 runs in 125 matches. His tally includes one century and 38 half-centuries.

Virat was joined by Rohit Sharma on his retirement journey after the T20 WC final. Rohit made the mega announcement while speaking to the media. He made his T20I debut in 2007 and has featured in every T20 WC so far.

Ravindra Jadeja also quit T20I cricket a day after the final. The star all-rounder made his T20I debut in 2009. Jadeja cemented his spot in all three formats in 2019 and became India’s prime all-rounder. Jadeja only managed one wicket in the 2024 T20 WC.
