Following Portugal‘s exit from the ongoing EURO 2024 after their quarter-final defeat to France, team captain Cristiano Ronaldo expressed that they had deserved a better outcome in the tournament. Portugal, led by Cristiano Ronaldo, were eliminated from Euro 2024 following a disheartening loss to France. Despite holding the game to a 0-0 draw until full time, Portugal failed to stop any of the French players’ penalty shots and were defeated 5-3.

Ronaldo shared on his official X account that Portugal merited more at the ongoing EURO 2024. He also expressed his team’s gratitude for the fans’ unwavering support.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner affirmed that Portugal’s legacy will be honored and that they will continue to build upon it.

“We wanted more. We deserved more. For us. For each one of you. For Portugal. We are grateful for everything you have given us and for everything we have achieved so far. On and off the field, I am sure that this legacy will be honored and will continue to be built. Together,” Ronaldo wrote.

The 2024 European Championship has been disappointing for Ronaldo, as he didn’t score any goals throughout the tournament despite playing in all five matches, though he did manage one assist.

Portugal controlled the quarter-final match against France in Hamburg, maintaining 60 percent possession compared to France’s 40 percent.

With both teams unable to score during the 120 minutes of play, the match went to penalties. Joao Felix was the sole player to miss a penalty for Portugal, putting Roberto Martinez’s team at a disadvantage. Ultimately, France secured victory with a 5-3 win in the penalty shootout.

CR7 has announced it earlier that this edition of the European Championship will be his last dance, when it comes to the continental showpiece and now we have to see whether he continues playing for Portugal anymore in competitive tournaments like the World Cup, Nations League or not.
