who was dr. anu adepoju? nigerian plastic surgeon dies after illness

Dr. Anu Adepoju, the founder of MedContour Services Ltd, has died following a prolonged illness. Adepoju, who was well-known for her disputed cosmetic surgery practices, came under intense legal and public attention as a result of her poorly executed surgeries.

A federal high court in Lagos convicted Adepoju to one year in jail in May 2024. The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) launched an inquiry into her actions, and accusations for hindering that probe led to her conviction. The death of Nneka Onwuzuligbo, a patient who had deadly consequences after an unsuccessful plastic surgery procedure carried out by Adepoju, served as the impetus for this inquiry.

Adepoju was charged with five offenses, some of which included Onwuzuligbo’s killing. However, the court postponed her sentence and ordered her to pay N100,000 in fines for each conviction.

Social media responses to Adepoju’s passing have been more intense, centered on her usage of narcotics without any supporting evidence. Her self-administered “cocktail drugs,” which some think contributed to her declining health, have been the focus of criticism. Serious damage to Adepoju’s arm was seen in a video that blogger Cutie Juls posted, raising more questions about the safety of unlicensed medical procedures.

Cocktail Drugs: According to the National Institute of Health, the practice of mixing the use of opioids with non-opioid drugs appears to be widespread, based on recent findings; nevertheless, little is understood about this phenomena and how best to treat it. It was common practice to combine opioids with other drugs; “that’s what we call the cocktail.” In addition to opioids, participants in an NIH test reported using alcohol and candies, promethazine, amphetamine salts, quetiapine, clonidine, gabapentin, benzodiazepines, and barbiturates.

Calls for tighter laws and a reevaluation of plastic surgery procedures and items provided by unlicensed practitioners have been spurred by discussions on social media.
